Our Book Of The Month

Baa Baa Black Sheep, by Gregory Boyington

This is great reading; I highly recommend it. Recall that it was published in the late 1950's, and in that era probably seemed quite racy -- drinking, divorce, womanizing. But "sensationalism" was not its main appeal; rather Pappy's candid self-assessments (sprinkled liberally throughout) are what makes it unique. "What an awful thing to do to another human being on Christmas Day." is typical.

Accuracy? In the past 15 years, at least two books have been written, "to set the Black Sheep Squadron's record straight." I'm no judge, but it seems to me that there are books of fiction and books of non-fiction, but that most "fighter pilot memoirs" tend to blur that distinction. And Baa Baa Black Sheep is an enjoyable example of that gray area.
